SIX

He watched her as she sat at the bar, her pretty brow crinkled in concentration as she wrote out the stories one by one. She kept licking her lips, running that little tongue back and forth, and stealing his attention. He couldn’t help but stare at her as his imagination took off.

He could see her doing torturous things to him with that tongue. Hell, she had him in pain; he was already so hard for her. She’d bend over him and explore his body. Just when he couldn’t stand the destructive pleasure of her mouth, he’d do the same to her. He’d stretch out between her thighs and drive her crazy with his mouth.

“Do you have to stare at me like that? It’s making me mess up.” She scribbled on the paper and then went back to doing that damn thing with her tongue again.

“Apologies.” He rose from the bar and quickly turned to hide the bulge that had formed from his diabolical imagination. He busied himself with pacing in the dining room, out of sight of the delicious pixie driving him nutty with her cute gestures. If he didn’t do something to calm his libido, he’d end up yanking her off that barstool and kissing her until they both forgot how to breathe.

Hell, he could barely breathe thinking about it.

Damn it all to hell. His body tightened despite how much he tried to stop it and he knew he’d lost the battle. This would be the second time he’d come out the loser to Anne Feldman.

It was now well after ten. Reggie had shown up after all and worked fast. Before he left he’d had half the floor sanded, evened out, and ready for finish.

Now it was just James and Anne, and that had his nerves so tight they were ready to snap.

“How’s this sound?”

Without hesitation he practically sprinted into the other room to be closer to her. “I’m listening.”

“This is the story behind the deer over by the bathrooms. John was heading to Missoula and saw some deer bedded down in a field. He didn’t think anything of it until he saw the rack on one of them. He knew the owners, so John went up, asked permission to hunt their field, and snuck out there. He said he belly crawled for miles.”

“Miles, you say? He must have had incredible eyesight to be able to see them.”

She laughed and the light sound lifted his heart. “The field isn’t even a mile. John loved to exaggerate. So he’s belly crawling since there’s no cover. It took him most of the day to inch toward the buck. He finally got close enough and jumped up like Rambo, took the shot, and left half the deer for the owners as a thank you.”

“That’s a splendid story. Change it to first person. Have it read as if John is standing here, not just telling the story, but reliving it. Add a few descriptive emotions.”

She nodded as she looked at the paper. “Good idea.
